LuBertha Govan Obituary

On February 8, 1945, a Beautiful Sparkling Baby Girl was born to Willie Edward Townsend and Alice S. Griffin Townsend Minor. They named her, Lu Bertha Marie Townsend. She is the third of seven children and the oldest girl of her siblings.

She was raised and attended schools in Los Angeles Ca.

At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Saviour, in the early 70’s She joined and became a member of First Charity Missionary Baptist Church.

In the late ‘50s, she met and fell in love with Ray Dell Govan, on June 23, 1961. She became Lu Bertha Marie Govan and to this union, they were blessed with four children, Patrenna, Sabrina, Marvella, and Ray Jr. The Govans remained married for 35 years until his passing in November of 1995.

During her life span, she gave many years of service of employment in different areas, like Seamstress, Retail, and Kedren. Lu Bertha was a board member of the Los Angeles School District until she was no longer able to.

Lu Bertha was very active in her children’s and other relatives’ social activities, which included Challengers Boys and Girls Club, Jazz Drill Team, and Drum Squad.  She did not mind picking up or taking people anywhere they needed to go and would wait patiently for you no matter how long it took.

Most of all rather she was called: Bertha, Auntie, Aintsista, Aynnie.

Lu Bertha had a kind spirit and unconditional LOVE for everyone.

Lu Bertha leaves to cherish her memory, her mother and father, Alice and Willie Townsend, and her husband Ray Dell Govan Sr. who preceded her in death. Two Brothers Darryl and Joseph, and Three Sisters Estella, Loretta and Cookie Townsend. One Brother-in-Law Eligha Govan, Two Sisters in Law Doris Morrow and Tommie Jean Jones, all who also preceded her in death.

Three Daughters, Patrenna Roygee, Sabrina Govan and Marvella Govan. One Son Ray Dell Jr. Govan. Two Granddaughters, Tiffany Govan- Miller, and Tia' Lafaye Govan-Gardner, and. Two Son in Laws, James Roygee and Mark Moore. One Sister, Thomasena Townsend Brown, two Sister in Laws, of Texas, Patricia Govan- Parker and Betty Govan.  A host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
