JOYCE SIMON Obituary

Joyce Marjorie Simon was a Belizean-American born on September 28, 1942. Faith, family, friendship and gratitude are the words that best capture the essence of her beautiful spirit.

Joyce was raised by her loving parents Edward and Gwenneth Simon in Belize. As the younger sister of Raymond Simon and Jean Simon Furlough and the older sibling of Nuri Muhammad (Bert Simon), and Barbara Kelly (nee Simon), Joyce was always a powerful force with which to contend.

At a very early age, Joyce migrated to the United States with her family. She graduated from Los Angeles High School. She then continued her education at Santa Monica College where she obtained an Associates degree in Business Administration. She developed a life-long affinity for books and writing poetry. To date, Joyce has published five books of poetry.

During her lifetime, Joyce held several revered positions both in her personal and professional life. Most notably, she worked at TTI, now Citibank, where her keen intelligence and writing skills were well utilized. Her true passion, however, was in service to the Lord. In keeping with her devotion to her Christian faith, Joyce was an invaluable member of the faith community. At Salem Missionary Baptist Church she served as a Trustee, member of the Salem Women’s Club and Youth Workshop teacher. She also served as the editor of Salem’s newsletter for 40 years. For the last several decades, Joyce found solace in her current church home—Christian Family Fellowship. At Christian Family Fellowship she continued her tireless service to her Lord, church community, and beyond. Joyce was extremely blessed and remained truly grateful to the Lord.

Joyce was extremely kind and thoughtful. She never failed to remember loved ones with greeting cards for birthdays, anniversaries or other holidays. If no one else remembered your special day, you’d be sure to receive a card and kind words from Joyce often accompanied by a practical and thoughtful gift.

There were many qualities that Joyce Simon will be remembered for but etched in the uppermost crevice of our minds will be that: she was fiercely independent; had a very strong will and determination; had a remarkable sense of humor; and she always spoke her truth regardless of the circumstances.

Joyce Marjorie Simon was an incredibly caring daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend and co-worker. Although Joyce did not have any children of her own, she mothered numerous nieces, nephews and friends of the family.

Joyce departed this life on May 13, 2023 to her Creator and Lord. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends who all loved her dearly. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, older brother Raymond and sisters Jean and Barbara. She is survived by her brother Nuri Muhammad and several nieces and nephews including: Chenel Hunt, Thameenah Muhammad, Gina Clark, Michelle Nevens, Ricky Kelly, Jr. and many others.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
