GARRY JOHNSON Obituary

By God’s Grace, Garry Andrew Johnson was born December 13, 1953 in Chattanooga,
Tennessee. Garry was raised by his maternal grandparents, along with his two younger sisters.
Garry was a loving and protective big brother. Due to health issues of his grandmother, Garry
and his sisters moved to Mount Vernon, New York to live with their maternal aunt, Joyce
Peterson. There, Garry graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1970. Shortly thereafter he
enlisted and served in the Navy and was honorably discharged in 1974 due to injury. After his
Navy service, he settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he created lifelong friendships.
Garry eventually moved to Los Angeles, Ca, where he met his life partner Joyce Garrett. He
worked in public transit, including bus , van and taxi driver. He retired from the Veterans Affairs Administration after 5 years of service.

Survived by partner, Joyce Garrett of 22 years. son, Kai Johnson, father figure to Johnny Rex
and Justin Simon, sister Shelia (Jarvis)Brown, nieces Maritza(Shawn)Groomes, Nollie Brown,

uncle Ronald Bonds Sr. Along with a host of cousins and friends.

Garry was preceded in death by mother Barbara Nunley, grandparents Charlie and Eva Johnson,
sister Anita Johnson, aunts Joyce Peterson, Bertha Bonds, uncles Edward Johnson, Joe Johnson.

Garry was much loved as a partner, father, brother and a great friend. He will be missed.
Internment will be at the Los Angeles National Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, clippings or flower seed can be sent to the family residence, 1920 W 94th Place, Los Angeles 90047. A garden will be created in his honor.
